Hairstyles that prevent lice

The rule of thumb to help prevent head lice is to always have your kids hair tied up in some shape or form (unless they have short hair, then it is difficult). The less hair hanging freely, the more difficult it makes it for lice and nits to make a home in their hair.

The best hairstyles to prevent head lice are the ones that hold hair closest to their head. Here are some suggestions of hairstyles to help prevent lice that are quick and easy to do while getting ready for school.

Ponytail: To form a pony tail, you will need a brush or comb, a hair tie and pins/clips for fly-away hairs. For one ponytail, grab all of the hair and hold it securely in your non-dominant hand. Use your dominant hand to band the hair with the hair tie. Twist and wrap the tie once more, and continue until the ponytail is tightly secured

Bun: To form a bun, start with the ponytail instructions. Once the ponytail is in place, grab and twist the hair clockwise around the base of the ponytail. Keep wrapping and twisting the hair until you wrap the full length around the base. Secure the bun in place with another hair tie, or with bobby pins.

French Braid: Braids are complicated to describe, but are easy to master with a little practice. In order to learn how to braid, please use videos to figure out the “A,B,C” pattern that feels most comfortable to you, especially if you do not have a friend to show you how to french braid hair. French braids are so nice because they keep the hair close to the head, and offer a pretty braid alternatives and variations. They are worth the practice!
